This guide has been created to provide resources to assist schools in:
- tackling homophobic bullying and language
- representing a range of different families
- challenging stereotypes
- instilling a love of books and reading
Effective use of resources:
- Because homophobia has tended to be under-represented in terms of resources there may be a tendency to 'grab' at a new resource when it comes along. As with any resource, where possible preview resources, assess the quality and identify if it will meet the need of your own context. Experience shows that opinions on educational resources vary wildly and you are encouraged to make your own judgements based on your knowledge of your pupils. Inclusion of a resource in this list should not be viewed as an endorsement.
- Some government issued resources such as 'Safe to Learn' are decommissioned over time; however they are included in this list as they contain elements which still may prove useful.
- Avoid using resources with children 'cold'. Staff will need to first become familiar with them and have opportunities to discuss the content.
- Resources should always be age appropriate and adapted to meet the needs of your own pupils and context. If in doubt discuss them with the leadership team.
- Sharing resources in advance will usually allay any misconceptions.
Notes on Using Books about Different Families and LGBT People
- Please note that these lists have been collated for information purposes and do not serve as a recommendation. As with any book intended for use in school the content should be reviewed before use.
- Picture books may be used as a visual literacy/philosophy resource across key stages.
- It is useful to run familiarisation sessions around texts that may be considered to be more challenging for either staff, pupils and parents
- Some of these texts you may have seen misrepresented in the press over the years, it is important for you to become familiar with them and to see how they can support whole school policy in representing a range of family groups and in promoting acceptance between groups.
- From experience, children respond to many of these texts in a thoughtful manner and often show no reaction to the 'same-sex' or 'difference' themes.
- In some cases using the books will result in pupils disclosing that they have family members or friends, who are LGBT, it is important that this happens in a supportive and inclusive class-room environment. Making links to the pupils' own lives and experiences is key.
- Some of these books make excellent stimuli for text based teaching units.
- Books regularly come in and out of fashion, both socially and politically; it is important that you consider the needs of your pupils and be as familiar with the texts as you can.
- These books may serve as stimuli for discussion, philosophical or literacy based activities, or may be read for pleasure and to inform.
- Some books might be harder to track down.
